Revealed at E3, the Nintendo 3DS’ Tag Mode has been a little bit of a mystery. The mode allows gamers to share data both locally and via Wi-Fi hotspots even if they’re playing a game. The feature has been confirmed for Nintendogs and Cats, but in a recent interview with Wired, Hideki Konno said the feature could also be rolled out for other 3DS games including Mario Kart and Animal Crossing.
In the hardware, we have the capability that when you first play a game that supports Tag Mode, it will save to a Tag Mode data slot in the hardware system. We are planning to support multiple games at the same time: Mario Kart, Nintendogs, Animal Crossing, etc.
We’ll prepare a Tag Mode Viewer, where if you look at the viewer you’ll be able to see that, for example you were able to connect with 50 people in Nintendogs and got their data, or got 100 people in Animal Crossing.
We would like to create Tag Mode so that it will bring consumers a sense of wanting to play a game again, after they get new data from games that they’d forgotten about.
Sounds exciting eh? basically, your games will always be up to date with brand new content directly from Nintendo (and possibly from other players – make it happen Nintendo!). Hence, replayability and longevity will be greatly increased. Bring it on!
